Select committee launches inquiry into UK energy efficiency

A new inquiry into household energy efficiency and demand reduction has been launched in the UK.

It follows the government’s announcement to end two key policies – Zero Carbon Homes and Green Deal – without bringing forward any replacement schemes.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) initiative is also due to end in March 2017.

The Energy and Climate Change Committee said it will be investigating what lessons can be learnt from these and previous energy efficiency schemes.

“Energy efficiency and demand reduction is one of the most cost effective ways to cut carbon emissions, improve energy security and reduce consumer bills”, it stated.

The committee is inviting views on why previous approaches to energy efficiency have failed to deliver “significant” results, what lessons can be learnt from the schemes and how the UK’s performance compares with other countries.
