Environmental marketing firm concerned by carbon emissions from UK universities

The latest data has indicated that universities and colleges will miss their collective 2020 carbon emissions reduction target.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) set a target for a 43% reduction in carbon emissions over a 15-year period from a 2005 baseline. At the halfway point in 2013, however, there had only been a reduction of 8.5%.

Research conducted by a major sustainability consultant predicts that the sector will only achieve 51% of its 2020 target. Content Communications, a low-carbon PR company specialising in technology marketing, is shocked by these figures.

Joanna Watchman, Managing Director at the environmental marketing expert, says: “It is appalling that universities and colleges in the UK are not on track to meet their target. We are intrigued by the barriers that are preventing successful carbon reduction.”

She adds: “With rising prices, it would only be sensible for these large institutions to minimise their energy use. This is a major opportunity for low-carbon technology companies to engage with the sector and demonstrate how targets can easily be met with energy-efficient upgrades.”
