This sector includes industries such as renewable energy, waste and recycling, and pollution protection. The figures, released by the European Commission and compiled by statistics expert Eurostat, also showed that the sector employs more than four million people.

Eurostat says that the environmental sector has great potential for growth, offering job creation and economic development. Content Communications, a content marketing firm, notes that the rapidly expanding low-carbon sector provides a significant opportunity for UK businesses.

Joanna Watchman, Managing Director at the industry PR firm, Content Coms, says: “This EU-wide growth is mirrored in the UK, with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills stating that the sector value stands at £3.4 trillion in 2011-12.”

She adds: “As a low-carbon PR expert, we know that sustainability will continue to be an important market driver. With ever-increasing customer demand for green products, we urge organisations to ensure they are effectively communicating the environmental benefits of their goods and services.”
